Aircraft Services - Many people not involved in the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) industry tend to think of maintenance as simply "fixing an aircraft". They don't understand that an engine mechanic can't be the one to change the interior of the cabin!
So in this article we'll discuss the three types of aircraft maintenance that make up different positions and job types - hopefully this clears things up
Aircraft Services
This part of the maintenance is done on the tarmac during the transition while the aircraft is still in its operating area. Regulation 145 defines line repairs as any repair work that may be carried out outside sleeping quarters, in the open air. The tasks involved in line maintenance are relatively simple and typically include routine service checks, daily testing, troubleshooting and repairs. Parts designated as line replaceable units (LRUs) can be replaced during this time. Line maintenance is often limited by the availability of ground support equipment.
What Maintenance Is Required To Keep Planes Safe & Sound?
Unlike online maintenance, basic maintenance involves removing the aircraft from service for a longer period of time, usually longer than one day, possibly thirty (30) days. This occurs in a hangar, where the aircraft is separated from its operating environment; special tools and equipment are required. It is during this maintenance period that regular inspections are carried out, as well as any repair work and fault investigations. In fact, basic maintenance involves more difficult tasks than line maintenance, such as C and D inspections. Basic maintenance requires more time-consuming activities including structural work, preventing corrosion, refurbishing the interior and replacing major components.
So what happens to all the parts that are replaced or removed from production lines and basic maintenance? This is where component maintenance comes into play. Aircraft parts, various electromechanical aircraft and engine parts, and even complete engines are among the parts that are thoroughly inspected in specialist shops after disassembly. The LRU faces the same fate. In this type of maintenance, you'll be dealing with individual components rather than the aircraft itself. Maintenance Manuals (CMMs) are used to identify tasks that need to be done on a particular part. Contains methods to restore components to a usable state.
While they may look different, all three types of aircraft maintenance require a great deal of skill and attention to detail - and there's nothing more satisfying than seeing an aircraft when you've successfully completed the job. It's top notch!
