Airplane Rental - Trying to calculate the monetary cost of flying can be frustrating. Most people are completely overwhelmed when doing an online search. However, in my many years in the aviation industry, I've learned that there are some key factors that help you know how much you're paying and what you're getting for that money.
The hourly rate for renting a plane varies greatly depending on the type of plane. Below are general guidelines for how much you should pay for various sizes of aircraft.
Airplane Rental
Aircraft rental prices are highly dependent on many factors. The first factor is the price difference between "dry rate" and "wet rate".

In the world of aviation, a full fuel tank is not always desirable. If you need to carry more passengers or luggage on board, you may need to reduce your weight elsewhere to avoid exceeding the maximum weight limit. One easy way to do this is to reduce the amount of fuel in your tank. Fuel is relatively heavy and levels can be easily changed.
But... getting fuel out of the tank is much harder than putting it in. Therefore, when you finish using the rental machine, the rental company does not always want you to return the rental machine with a full tank.
Gasoline costs are not borne by the customer, but are borne by the car rental company. They add the price of fuel to the price of the rent. The rental fee before fuel cost is called “dry fee”, and the fee including fuel is called “wet fee”.
Most rental companies, especially flight schools, advertise wet rate prices. But don't make assumptions. It is very important to understand the displayed prices. Misunderstanding this issue can result in large unexpected costs.

The second factor that affects the price of rental aircraft is the type of aircraft. At the cheaper end of the spectrum are two-seater coaches. Common examples of two-seater trainers are the legendary Piper J-3 'Cub', Cessna 150, Cessna 152, Piper P38 'Tomahawk' and Diamond DA20 'Katana'.
The advantage of a two-seater bus is that the rental fee is cheap. But while rental prices are lower than other planes, these smaller planes have to pay in other areas: weight. On most of these planes, with two adults in the seats and a full tank of gas, you're already over the maximum gross weight limit for the plane. This is a limitation that you should seriously consider if you are a physically large individual. It is definitely a consideration for me!
His second group of aircraft is an older model of his four-seater single-engine aircraft. For the purposes of this comparison, we consider anything made before the year 2000 to be "old". Common examples of this group are the Cessna 172 "Skyhawk" and the Piper PA-28 150 "Warrior".
Like his two-seater carriage above, these four-seater models of his are great for keeping rental costs low. And they solve the small weight limit problem.

One of these cost-saving trade-offs is potential aircraft downtime for maintenance. Older models may require more TLC than newer models depending on years of care. With this necessary maintenance, we may have some nice days, but we still can't fly!
One way to avoid maintenance downtime is to rent newer model aircraft. Often these models also include great technical updates to make flying easier or more fun. As with older model four-seater aircraft, newer models may include the Cessna 172 "Skyhawk", Piper PA-28 150 "Warrior" and Diamond DA-40 "Star".
However, the trade-off is cost. When you buy a new model, rental prices start rising rapidly.
When boarding newer model aircraft, you must also ensure that you are qualified to fly them. Some newer models have added features and technology that require training or license approval not required on other aircraft. For example, if your engine makes more than 200 horsepower, you must add a high performance endorsement to your license.

One of the painful lessons many new pilots encounter is that just because the plane has four seats for him doesn't mean he can fit four people on the plane. Four adults is often more than the weight a plane can handle. The solution to this problem is to increase the size of aircraft and the number of available seats.
A six-passenger single-engine plane is a great way to expand the variety of things you can do on the plane. They increase aircraft capabilities and range. Commonly his six-seat single-engine aircraft are Beechcraft Bonanza A36, Cessna 206 'Station Air' and Piper PA32 'Cherokee Six'.
As is evident from the figures above, the increased functionality of these aircraft also brings with them a significant increase in price.
We strongly discourage training on such aircraft. The obvious reason is cost. This is a very expensive method if you're just trying to build time.

But more importantly, these planes are much more complicated to fly than the Cessna 152 and 172. These planes have very nice "accessories", but these extra items can make the learning curve very steep. If your goal is to fly one of these aircraft, it's much better to start with a much simpler and cheaper aircraft and work your way up to these aircraft.
And even if you already have a license, these aircraft require a high performance endorsement to your license. Therefore, we have no plans to jump directly on these birds from the Cessna 150 trainer. Talk to your coach first.
Also keep in mind that as aircraft become larger and more complex, it becomes very difficult to find airports with companies that rent these aircraft. Just because they exist doesn't mean you can rent them in your part of the country!
If you want to get the most out of your pilot's license, a 6- to 8-passenger multi-engine aircraft is the way to go. Adding a second engine allows you to fly over more dangerous terrain, such as mountains or open water, with the assurance that you'll reach the runway safely if you lose your engine. Its second engine also increases the amount of weight it can carry and the length of time it can fly.

Engines are the most expensive parts of an aircraft. One engine burns fuel. Two engines he consumes twice as much fuel. Engines require the most maintenance in an airplane. When he doubles the machines, he doubles his maintenance costs. You can see this difference in the prices above.
To fly a multi-engine aircraft, the pilot's license also requires a multi-engine rating. Understanding the unique dynamics of multi-engine flight is critical to flying safely.
To be honest, it's very rare to find a multi-engine aircraft available for rent. Most people who really want to fly a large multi-engine aircraft have enough money to buy one for themselves.

However, owning your own plane isn't always the best option. Depending on how much time you spend in the air, renting a plane may be the right choice.

Not exactly. To rent an airplane, you must be a certified pilot. In some areas, such as mountainous terrain, additional qualifications and training may be required to rent an aircraft. But wherever you go, you'll need a pilot's certificate to begin the rental process.
There are three popular ways to rent an aircraft: flight schools, fixed base stations (FBOs), and flying clubs. Each option has caveats, but chances are you can find at least one of these in your area.
Flight schools are in business to provide training to new and existing pilots. This usually means having multiple instructor aircraft in stock. Flight schools offer a wide range of aircraft and solid rental options to choose from. If you're trying to qualify as a pilot, or are looking to upgrade your own pilot, flight schools also have training courses to help you get there. Some flight schools also have relationships with OEMs to improve the process of purchasing new aircraft.
