Tokyo Marui Glock 17 Upgrades - My Glock 17 has functioned almost flawlessly since I first received it about two years ago. You can't beat the performance of the TM Glock right out of the box. But even though it's perfect at first, there's always that voice in the back of your head that tells you it could do better.

The first upgrade I did to my TM was to replace the original lower plastic with a Guarder nylon fiber frame. Within the first year of use, the lower frame of the Glock pistol began to show fractures and cracks all over the body that were not visible to me. Most of them you will never see unless you hold them up to the light or when you take them apart. My understanding is that most of the damage is caused by the pressure on the airgun from using the green gas (propane). TM is designed primarily for red gas (dust collector or whatever) that expands at a lower velocity. The use of green gas represents an additional burden on the body, which in turn causes the deterioration of the lower frame. Check out the damage below.

Both the front and rear pillars bolted to the bottom were broken by green gas. The breech is when the gun eventually fails, causing the hammer mechanism at the rear to move. Run it until you break it.

I picked up the Guarder lower frame (pictured below) at a nearby Milsig shop and swapped out the internals for a new frame. A very handy resource in this disassembly/reassembly is the LaZouche Custom Shop on youtube. It has tons of gas gun reviews, disassembly and reassembly videos.

From testing so far, the new lower frame has held up well under the pressure of using green gas.

Another upgrade I got and installed was the FALCON 6.03 precision tube kit for the Marui G17 (pictured below) complete with Falcon hop up bucking. The G17 hasn't been shooting as fast as it used to lately, so I'm deciding to take the leap with a new barrel. More details about its performance.

I bought the barrel and bucket on Ehobbyasia for about $35. The whole unit is packaged in a sturdy plastic tube with rubber caps on both ends, which is nice.

The support is made of harder rubber and has a two-point rebound. The hope with this setup is that the dual dot, similar to the PDI W-Hold design, will stabilize the bbs as they are fired, improving shooting accuracy.

The third and final upgrade I got was the ACTION Enhanced Recoil Spring Guide. Not that I need a stronger recoil spring since my slide is made of plastic, but I wanted to experiment with the cycle rate of the gun. One factor I have to monitor is the stress this puts on the slide. They are usually designed to be used with metal looped sliders due to their heavier weight, so when looking at the options I looked for a mid-range option. The spring is stronger than the one I have now, but not so strong that it would break my slide. You will see two spring guides in the picture below, the stock recoil spring that comes with the TM Glock on the left and the improved recoil spring on the right. There are significantly more windings on the reinforced spring, and the guide itself is noticeably heavier and stronger.

As I gain more experience with barrels, pulls and recoil springs I will post my experiences with them.
